Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of plastic fabrication applications.
What is Polypropylene (PP)?
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer, meaning that it responds to heat for moulding and shaping. Its properties are similar to polyethylene, with higher heat and friction resistance. This makes polypropylene particularly tough and flexible, and often a cheaper substitute for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.

You can find polypropylene in the automotive industry being used for car battery cases and bumper bars, in construction for pipes and electrical components, and just about everywhere else! It comes in a range of textures, colours and thicknesses.

Performance characteristics of Polypropylene (PP)

-
Resistant to organic corrosive chemicals
-
Flexible, tough and fatigue resistant - does not break when continually bent
-
Easy to machine
-
High resistance to electricity - good for electronic components
-
May be more easily repaired than many other plastic materials

One of the benefits of polypropylene is that it can be manufactured into a living hinge. A living hinge is a thin piece of plastic surrounded by thicker plastic that allows for bending without breaking. Polypropylene living hinges can be made via CNC machining, injection molding, thermoforming or crimping.
Limitations of Polypropylene (PP)

-
Not particularly suited to structural applications
-
Not suitable for high temperature applications
-
Highly flammable
-
Poor bonding properties - hard to paint and/or bond with other surfaces
-
Poor resistance to chlorinated solvents

Polypropylene sheets are available in a range of sizes, thicknesses, colours and transmissibility. Please feel welcome to talk with us about stock availability.
Applications for Polypropylene (PP)
The uses for polypropylene plastic are almost endless. In its fibre form, polypropylene can be used for bags, rope, carpet, clothing and tents. In sheet form, for pipes, tanks, packaging and vehicle parts. And moulded into a vast array of containers and other components in almost every industry you can imagine.
